I really enjoyed this fictional British pre-WWII drama, based on the novel “Munich” by Robert Harris.  The plot is interesting and creative, the acting is excellent, and there’s considerable suspense throughout the last half of the film.  If it had been released in 2021, it would have been in my Top 10!  If you are interested in WWII, it’s a MUST-SEE!

It’s 1932 and English George MacKay (Hugh Legat) and German Jannis Niewohn (Paul Hartman) are about to graduate from Oxford.  They are close friends, but they now need to go their separate ways.  A few years later, George is in Germany visiting Jannis.  They are dining when they start talking about Adolf Hitler (Martin Wuttke), who is running for Chancellor of Germany.  George thinks Hitler is a racist thug, while Jannis is pro-Hitler because he is restoring German pride.  Jannis doesn’t think Hitler’s anti-Semitic rhetoric will gain much traction.  The argument gets heated, Jannis storms out of the restaurant, and their friendship suddenly ends!

The film then shifts to 1938.  The risk of war between Germany and England is escalating since Hitler is about to invade Czechoslovakia.  Jannis is working in the German Foreign Service and now realizes that Hitler is a maniac who needs to be stopped!  Hitler plans to take over much of the European continent because Germany is too crowded, although he claims otherwise.  British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain (Jeremy Irons) and Hitler are going to meet in Munich in a last-ditch attempt to avert war.  Jannis reaches out to George, and they develop a plan to try to stop Hitler, who will disregard the treaty even if one is made.  Chamberlain doesn’t trust Hitler, but he was traumatized by WWI and will do just about anything to preserve the peace.

The rest of the movie is about how this plan unfolds.  I was on “The Edge of” my seat throughout much of the second half of this taut film.  It’s a very good espionage thriller, and, if you like this genre, you won’t be disappointed!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
