At 89 minutes, “Kimi” is a compact thriller with an interesting premise.  It’s free on HBO Max, and Robin, my close friend Warren, and myself all think it’s a winner!

Angela Childs (Zoe Kravitz) lives alone in a very nice apartment in Seattle.  She works for a company that will be launching an IPO next week that makes “Kimi,” the next generation “Alexa” device.  She helps Kimi understand human requests when they are not understood by the device.  She is agoraphobic (for reasons we learn later), so she works remotely.

While listening to the not-understood requests, she overhears what appears to be a violent crime!  Shaken, Angela reports the matter to the CEO and majority shareholder.  He stands to make many 100’s of millions with the stock going public, so he wants Angela to ignore it.  Angela insists that she must do something, so he refers her to Natalie Chowdhury (Rita Wilson) who will investigate the issue.  I won’t say any more about the plot, but the situation escalates, eventually putting Angela’s life in danger!

The film is almost a solo one for Kravitz, with few actors in any of the scenes until the last 30 minutes.  I have been a Zoe Kravitz fan ever since “Big Little Lies” (as well as a long-term Lenny K. fan), and I think she does a great job and carries the film admirably.

It’s a nice morality tale about the dangers of technology and greed which I think most will enjoy, but you may want to think twice about using “Alexa” after seeing it!

As a bonus, the last song on the soundtrack is a great heavy-metal rock song – “Connection,” by the all-female band “Elastica.”

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
