I didn’t see the last few “Spider-Man” movies, and some characters that I didn’t know had substantial parts, but I was still able to follow the plot well, even though I probably missed some of the subtleties. Noah saw it and liked it a lot, so, on his recommendation, Robin and I saw it on Saturday. Although some critics didn’t like it much, the fans loved it! Rob and I enjoyed it, and, unless you are absolutely fed up with Marvel movies, this one is worth seeing (on the B.S. – IMAX is not necessary).
Spider-Man (aka Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland) is having a rough time. In the prior movie, for reasons I don’t know, Spider-Man erased the memories of him from his girlfriend and love of his life, MJ (Zendaya), and his best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon). They vaguely remember being rescued by him a few times long ago, but nothing else. Peter feels very lonely, and is grieving over the loss of MJ and Ned. He has become a workaholic, fighting crimes non-stop, as a defense against his painful feelings. Due to his repression, the natural balance between his human and spider DNA has gotten out of balance, and sometimes the spider DNA becomes too intense. Spider-Man then becomes impulsive and excessively-aggressive, causing considerable harm. He relies on technology to try to solve the problem, but loses himself in the only partially-successful process.
There is a formidable villain who keeps trying to break into the very-important “Damage Control” facility to steal a computer file or something. This person has the ability to enter the minds of others to make them do what is needed to accomplish the task. Spider-Man is enlisted to try to stop this villain. I won’t say any more about the plot, but the new villain is an interesting character. The first 30 minutes of this 2-hour-&-25-minute film are a bit slow, but the final two hours are quite entertaining.
Bottom Line: This is a better-than-average super-hero movie. If you decide to see it, despite its length, you won’t be “climbing the walls” with impatience.
