This is a thoroughly enjoyable and fun film. It’s a terrific mystery with a satisfying ending. There are enough clues that it is possible to figure it out, but most of you won’t. I consider it a MUST-SEE!

Harlan Thrombrey (Christopher Plummer) is a hugely successful mystery writer, and a party is being held to celebrate his birthday. All important family members are there, and he is financially supporting all of them in one way or another. Also present at the party is his nurse, Marta (Ana de Armas). At about midnight, Harlan’s throat is cut. It appears to be a suicide, but cutting one’s throat is statistically an extremely rare way to do it. Two policeman come by to close the case. They are convinced it’s a suicide. Also arriving, however, is the famous detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). He was sent a newspaper clipping about the suicide along with a large amount of cash. He doesn’t know who sent it, but, apparently, someone suspects foul play.

Almost all the family members at the party apparently have a motive to knock-off Harlan, who has over 50 million in assets! Detective Blanc enlists Marta to help him solve the case, since she has no motive to murder Harlan and she vomits whenever she lies.

I can’t reveal any more about the plot, but it’s terrific. The film has a great ensemble cast, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, and Don Johnson. The screenplay by writer/director Rian Johnson has some very creative curveballs as well as considerable humor. I anticipate that it will wind up on my Top 10 and it could win an AA nomination for Best Picture!

Bottom Line: “Knives Out” cuts to the chase!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
