Ford v Ferrari: A Winner!

In 1966, Ferrari was totally dominating the auto racing circuit. Ford Motor Company’s CEO Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) is at the end of his rope witnessing his company heading south, and he wants to turn things around. A marketing executive, Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal), thinks getting some wins on the auto racing circuit will boost sales. At first, Henry isn’t convinced, but, after being humiliated by Enzo Ferrari (Remo Girone) when Ford tried to buy-out his company, Henry decides to go all-out to beat the invincible Ferrari team at “Le Mans,” a grueling 24-hour race testing the driver and the car to the max.

Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) was once a great auto racer, but a heart condition forced an early retirement. He adapted to this tragedy by becoming an auto designer. Henry hires Shelby to build a car that can beat Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans. Shelby hires his friend and great British race car driver, Ken Miles (Christian Bale), to help him design and build the car. Ken drives it and keeps giving suggestions how to make it better and better.

This is a true story. Therefore, I won’t say any more about the plot so I don’t spoil any of the suspense. Suffice it so say that this is my favorite picture of 2019 (at least so far), and Christian Bale turns in an AAW performance. The racing scenes are spectacular. (I don’t watch car races, so I had no clue what it takes to be a great race car driver.) The story is very interesting, illustrating how big corporations get in their own way, the resilience of the human spirit, and the power of friendship. I consider it a MUST-SEE!

Ford v Ferrari might even win the “checkered flag” for Best Picture!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
