It’s 1942 and it’s a toss-up as to who’s going to win the war.  Although the Pacific is where just about all the WWII movie ocean battles have been filmed, this one is about the “Battle of the Atlantic.”

Commander Ernest Krause (Tom Hanks) is the Captain of the Destroyer-class “USS Keeling” – call sign “Greyhound.”  The Destroyer is leading a 37-ship convoy carrying needed war supplies to the allies.  This is his first voyage on this ship and his first experience with this type of mission.  The Germans have U-boat submarines that are trying to sink the supply ships – and the Greyhound, too.  It’s a dangerous and important mission.  The riskiest time is when the ships are without air cover, which lasts for about three days.  There isn’t much character development, but Commander Krause is a quiet hero, handling the intense life and death pressure and making all the right calls.

Hanks is very interested in WWII and has been involved in multiple WWII projects and films.  The screenplay Hanks wrote for Greyhound is minimalist, perhaps to a fault, but it is based on the book “The Good Shepherd” by C. S. Forester and is basically a true story.  The movie is slow at times, but the chess game with the U-boats and ocean battle scenes are exciting and realistic.

P.S.: If you get AppleTV+, make sure to see “The Morning Show” with Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell.  It’s a MUST-SEE!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
