If you’re in the mood for an action movie, this is a pretty good one and it’s free on Netflix.  It’s based on the comic book written by Greg Rucka, who also co-wrote the screenplay.  Andy (Charlize Theron) is the oldest of a band of four warriors who are either immortal or nearly-so, and they have been spending their lives fighting “the good fight” for worthy causes for hundreds and perhaps even thousands of years.  The youngest of the band is Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), who made his “overture” to the group in 1812.  A new immortal then emerges – Nile (Kiki Layne), who was a marine in Afghanistan.  She got her throat cut in a battle, but was as good as new in about a minute.  She joins up with the group via a psychic link which they all have active until they meet each other.

For some reason, however, someone wants to either capture or kill them, so they are “on the run” and, at the same time, trying to find and defeat their mysterious foe.  (Perhaps if they are burned or exploded, they die.)  Andy is getting weary of the whole scene.  One might say she has a terrible case of “Been There, Done That.”  Andy is also weighed down by the numerous losses of loved ones she has endured over her unending life.  Nile is young and enthusiastic, but she isn’t inclined to take orders from Andy, causing some interesting group dynamics.

There are excellent, well-choreographed fight scenes, and the movie has a good pace and will keep you interested.  The ending sets it up for a probable sequel – which I will watch, assuming it gets made.

P.S.:  Another interesting movie I really enjoyed with the theme of immortality was “The Age of Adaline” with Blake Lively.  I’d definitely watch this one, if you missed it when it premiered in 2015.

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
