Joel Coen was fascinated by Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” and, for many years, wanted to make a movie of it.  Apparently, his brother and usual movie partner, Ethan, wasn’t interested, so he decided to “go it alone.”  Joel succeeds admirably and this version of the legendary play is well worth seeing.  I won’t bother writing anything about the plot, since everyone already knows the story.  Written and first performed over 400 years ago, this Scottish play is still relevant today. To slightly alter a line from a Carly Simon song, “nobody says it better.”

Denzel Washington does a terrific job as Macbeth and Frances McDormand is her usual marvelous self as Lady Macbeth.  The film is shot in black and white, which is appropriate for the good/evil gestalt of the film.  The cinematography by Bruno Delbonnel and the amazing sets designed by Stefan Dechant are a sight to behold.

The play’s message about the dangers of unbridled ambition and how absolute power corrupts absolutely is still one to take seriously.  However, there is one message of the play which doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves: the danger of taking your wife’s advice too seriously!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
