If you’re in the mood for a rom-com, look no further than the terrific “Long Shot.”  It’s consistently funny and, at times, LOL hysterical.  It’s sort of a beauty-and-the beast love story, with political overtones and a nice message.  I enjoyed this even more than last year’s “Crazy Rich Asians,” and that film was in my 2018 Top 10.  I doubt that there will be a funnier film out this year.

Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) is a journalist for a small progressive newspaper.  He’s over-the-top, much like the late, great Hunter S. Thompson.  A conservative newspaper mogul, Parker Wembley (Andy Serkis), buys Fred’s paper, so Fred quits.  Fred calls up his best friend, Lance (O’Shea Jackson Jr.), for support and they get wasted.  Later that afternoon, Lance (who is a rich, successful businessman) takes him to a fundraiser where he re-connects with the beautiful Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron), the Secretary of State who, amazingly enough, was once his babysitter.  Charlotte recognizes him and they have a brief chat.

President Chambers (Bob Odenkirk), a former TV star, decides not to run for a second term in order to pursue his life-long dream of becoming a movie star (a transition made by only a few, such as George Clooney).  Chambers tells her that he will endorse her if she wants to run for President.  Charlotte’s adviser, Maggie (June Diane Raphael), obtains market research which indicates that Charlotte’s speeches lack humor.  Charlotte reads some of Fred’s newspaper articles and decides that he’s just the right the person to give her speeches the humor and punch that they need.  Fred accepts her offer to be one of her speech writers, and they start spending time together.  Fred is a non-compromising idealist while Charlotte’s main priority is to get elected, so she’s willing to compromise, which creates conflict between them.

What makes this an exceptional film is the wonderful chemistry between Rogen and Theron.  I don’t recall seeing Theron in a comedy before, but she does a great job.  If you like to laugh, this film is a MUST-SEE!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
