The Life of Chuck: Poorly Marketed Gem

My close friend Bruce suggested that I see this film, and I’m very glad I did.  The movie is based on a short story of the same name by Stephen King.  It won the Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award.  I spoke with Bruce right after I saw the movie, so he deserves partial credit for this review.  (I have asked Bruce, on numerous occasions, to write some reviews for the blog, since he is a very smart and perceptive guy – unfortunately, he is too busy.)  Bruce advised me to see it without knowing anything about it, and I think this was a good idea, but it means this review will be very short.

The movie has three sections, in reverse chronological order.  The acting is terrific, and each part is interesting, although I liked the middle part the best – including its terrific musical dance number!  The movie is profound and will provoke self -reflection on such themes as mortality, the meaning of life, what makes a fulfilling & successful life, friendship, love, and human connection.  It’s amazing that all of this can be conveyed in a short story!  I have ordered the book from Amazon, but I haven’t had time to read it yet.  The movie wasn’t marketed well and is no longer in the theatres, but make sure to rent it in a few months.  I think it will be in my Top 10 for the year!

Bottom Line: The Life of “Chuck” is a filet mignon of independent films!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
