I knew that Taylor Swift was a phenomenon, but I didn’t know why.  What was swirling around her seemed like “Beatlemania” or the craziness going on when Elvis arrived.  I had streamed “Red” on Apple Music, but I never really got into it.  My wife’s cousin’s 17-year-old daughter (Zoey) went to one of the 3 Sofi Stadium concerts.  She seemed to feel about Taylor just like I had felt about the “Beatles.”  When the 2-hour-&-45-minute movie came out, filming the best of the three Sofi concerts, my wife and I decided to see it in order to immerse ourselves in the Swift experience.  I thought Swift mainly appealed to teenage girls and women in their 20’s and 30’s, but the demographics will amaze you.  53% of American adults are “Swifties.”  52% are women and 48% are men.  45% are Millennials, 23% are Baby Boomers, 21% are Gen X, and 11% are Gen Z.

Kyla Scanlon, the brilliant, beautiful, and humorous economist, made a YouTube video about Taylor’s “The Eras Tour,” “How Taylor Swift Saved the Economy.”  Considering all the money the fans spent, in addition to the ticket prices for the concert, the tour grossed about 5 billion dollars (including hotels, restaurants, airfares, museums, etc.)  Click here or the title above to watch the full video.

My wife and I thought we would watch about 90 minutes of the 2 hour and 45 minute concert, get what all the hype was about, and then have dinner.  However, we were both blown away by how great Swift was and how well the film captured the concert, so we watched it all!  Taylor is an exceptional performer.  She is beautiful, has a terrific voice, writes first-rate songs (many of them with excellent lyrics), and plays the piano and guitar.  Although she is not a great dancer, she still moves very well.  What sets her apart from just about everybody else, however, is the emotional connection she makes with her audience and her authenticity.  She seemed genuinely moved by how much the fans loved and appreciated her.  She gave her heart and soul to the fans and put out tremendous energy for almost 3 hours.  Swift’s concert was about her music, not herself.

The movie has many close-ups of Swift, as well as shots of the fans, from various vantage points in the stadium.  Taylor has many outfit changes and she looks great in all of them.  The light show and sets are amazing.  I’m sure the actual concert was many times better, but if you didn’t catch the concert, this is as close to it as you can get.  Swift does most of her hits, from five Eras, including my two favorites, “Champagne Problems” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

Bottom Line: This is the best concert film that I have ever seen, and I am definitely going to the next Taylor Swift concert in SoCal!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
