This movie was recommended to me by my close friend Bruce, who I have been unsuccessfully asking to write blog reviews for me for many years. I almost always like the movies he recommends to me. This movie received awful reviews, so I wasn’t planning to see it; however, since Bruce liked it, I took a chance on it. I’m really glad I did.
Set in Wyoming, the film begins with Kenna (Maika Monroe) having just gotten released from a seven-year prison sentence related to a tragic situation. She lost custody of her daughter, who is being raised by the parents of her deceased father, Scotty (Rudy Pankow). Also helping out with the parenting is Scotty’s best friend, Ledger (Tyrig Withers). Kenna wants to be significantly involved with raising her daughter, but the grandparents hate her guts and blame her for the tragedy. Ledger doesn’t want anything to do with her, either. Kenna, having a prison record, is limited to minimum-wage jobs and is barely eking out a living. The film primarily revolves around Kenna trying to earn back the trust of the grandparents and Ledger so she can be a part of her daughter’s life.
Bruce isn’t writing this review, but I will quote his text to me so he gets the credit: “A gem in many ways. This picture is schmaltzy enough without being cloying, very funny and cute in spots; hangs together plot wise; has adequate twists; great musical score, good cinematography and a super-hot actress. I also enjoyed the intertwining themes of motherhood, brotherhood, and parenthood.”
I don’t have anything else to add to Bruce’s succinct comments except that Monroe is not only very pretty, but also a really good actress, too. I think the movie has left the theatres, but it’s considerably better than the average rental.
