Ready Player One: A”Virtual” Triumph!

I haven’t read the novel of the same name, written by Ernest Cline, but I don’t think it matters much.  The only video games I ever played were “Pong,” “Pac-Man” and “Guitar Hero” (and I wasn’t very good at any of them), but I don’t think this matters much either.  It’s a fun movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, working from the screenplay by Cline and Zak Penn.  It’s the prototypical summer movie, so I am puzzled why it was released in March.  It is liberally peppered with pop-culture film and rock references, which I enjoyed.  The movie is a visual feast with a nice message, too.

It’s 2045, and the USA and the world are not doing well.  There’s overpopulation, unemployment, and energy shortages, among other problems.  Just about everyone is miserable, so they spend most of their time in the amazing virtual reality universe, “the Oasis,” invented by the now-deceased genius, James Halliday (Mark Rylance).  When you enter “Oasis,” you can be whoever you want and create a new identity.  Halliday was a trillionaire, and, before his death, he created a treasure hunt to find an Easter Egg for all the players.  Whoever wins will be the sole owner of “Oasis” and, in addition to his/her fortune, will become one of the most powerful people on earth!

Innovative Online Industries (IOI) is the world’s largest internet provider.  Its CEO is an evil man, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn).  He has an army of players and will stop at nothing to find the Egg and win the treasure hunt.  Opposing him are our teenage heroes, including Wade Watts (in real-life)/ Parzival (in the Oasis) (played by Tye Sheridan), his love-interest, Samantha/Art3mis (Olivia Cook) and some others.  The film shoots most of the footage in the Oasis, where there is terrific CGI, but also shifts back-and-forth to reality.

Will one of our heroes be able to find the Egg?  Can the evil Nolan be stopped?  If you are “ready” to find out, then you’ll have to see it!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
