I don’t usually see horror movies, but my friends Rimal and Tina wanted to see it, so Robin and I went with them.  As horror movies go, this is a really good one.  If you like this genre and/or sci-fi movies, it’s one you won’t want to miss.

The film opens about three months after an alien invasion, and Earth has lost – big-time!  (I’ve seen so many alien invasion movies that I’ve been nominated to be the “Alien Ambassador” at the U.N.!)  A family with three kids is rummaging through a nearly-deserted pharmacy, which is in complete disarray, trying to pick up some supplies and medication.

The father, Lee (John Krasinski), and the mother, Evelyn (Emily Blunt), have a strong marriage, but there are serious family issues, testing the strength of the family unit (FYI, they are married in real life).  Their oldest child, Regan (Millicent Simmonds), is deaf, so everyone in the family speaks sign language.  Apparently, the aliens have incredible hearing and, if you make a sound, they will hear you and kill you within a few seconds.  The film is nearly continuously suspenseful, since most moments are fraught with the possibility of sound giving away the location of one of the family members.  Until the final 10 minutes of the film, you only get brief glimpses of the aliens, which adds to the suspense and mystery.  The family is desperately trying to survive, and Lee is seeking to discover any alien vulnerability in preparation for the inevitable Alamo-type last stand, which appears to be imminent.

At its core, the film is a compelling drama about family values, family conflict, risk-taking, courage, sacrifice and love, all in a lean-and-mean 90 minutes!  The screenplay (by Krasinski, Bryan Woods and Scott Black), although sparse on dialogue, is excellent.  The acting, including the children, is also first-rate.  To be “Blunt,” Emily is fabulous!

If you’re in the mood to get scared, see “A Quiet Place,” which is making quite a “buzz!”  (This movie was the #1 box-office attraction last week!)  It needs to be seen on the BS in order to “maximize” the scare quotient.

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
