I don’t have a daughter, but I have a granddaughter (Julie – age 8) and, when she grows up, I hope she’ll be a lot like Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG). This documentary, co-directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen, is an entertaining and informative film on RBG. The movie covers her entire lifespan, primarily her legal career prior to her becoming a Justice of the Supreme Court (where she fought courageously and tirelessly for gender equality), and her wonderful marriage to Martin Ginsburg. RBG possesses a brilliant legal mind, and she won 5/6 cases she took to the Supreme Court before she joined it. (As I often say, “If you CAN beat em, join ’em anyway!”) RBG was confirmed by the Senate and became the second female S.C. Justice in 1993, even though she was an advocate of a woman’s right to choose – a controversial opinion at the time.
RBG is now the darling of female millennials who have nick-named her “Notorious R.B.G.,” a name parodying the rapper “Notorious B.I.G.” Initially a centralist on the S.C., as the Court became more conservative, R.B.G. started writing more dissenting opinions, with a liberal/progressive perspective. Despite her being on the opposite end of the spectrum from the well-respected conservative Judge Antonin Scalia, they remained good friends (sharing their love of opera) until his recent death. RBG is not only a woman who has significantly improved the lives of American women, but she is also in great physical condition and works out religiously. She is a very formidable adversary, defeating both colon cancer and pancreatic cancer. (Apparently, fightling only one cancer wasn’t a fair fight!)
When RBG decides to retire from the S.C., if she moves out to Orange County, I’ll ask her to be my personal trainer!
