This film is sort of a sequel to Stephen Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s” trilogy. This time, Sandra Bullock (wonderful as ever) plays Debbie Ocean, the sister of the now-deceased Danny Ocean (George Clooney) from the prior films. Debbie has been in prison for five years, and, while she was there, she planned a daring robbery which she thinks is fool-proof, since she had so many years to refine it and eliminate any of its flaws.
She has ingeniously devised a plan to steal a diamond necklace worth about 150 million dollars – which will be worn by actress Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) – at the biggest NYC event of the year, “The Met Gala.” Debbie needs seven other women to execute her plan, so she recruits them, including Lou (Cate Blanchette) and Nine Ball (Rhianna).
I thought the first half of the movie was on the slow side, since it essentially involves introducing all the characters, as well as Debbie sharing the details of the plan with her accomplices. The second half (which involves the theft of the necklace), however, is entertaining and suspenseful. The movie is not nearly as good as “Topkapi” or even “The Italian Job,” but it’s still lots of fun. It compares favorably with the three prior “Ocean’s” movies.
The ensemble cast is excellent, but, without Sandra, the film wouldn’t be worth seeing. It will work fine as a rental, but, if you are a Sandra Bullock fan, you should see it on the BS now.
