I am a big Tom Cruise fan, despite the fact that he is anti-psychiatry (nobody’s perfect!)  I have enjoyed every movie in the series, and I think this one is the best of them all!  If you only see one action movie this year, make it this one!  I consider it a MUST-SEE!

The film takes off where “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” ended.  That film’s villain, Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), was captured by Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) in “Rogue Nation,” but Hunt did not kill him.  Various governments have been trying to extract information from Lane, but he is still involved somehow in a diabolical new plot, along with his mercenaries, “The Apostles,” to wreak havoc on the world in order to “bring down the world order.”  Lane sincerely believes the world is a very “F.U.” place and the only way to right “spaceship earth” is to create a world catastrophe!  Lane’s credo is “there is no great peace without great suffering.”  Lane’s plan is to buy black-market enriched plutonium and use it to make 3 nuclear bombs, then detonate them at strategic sites in order to create chaos and kill millions.

Hunt and his IMF team have been given the mission to obtain the plutonium before an intermediary, the unknown John Lark, can purchase it and then carry out Lane’s plan.  It turns out Lark may be a mole in the CIA or even the IMF itself!  Over his objections, Ethan is forced to bring a CIA agent, August Walker (Henry Cavill), who has been instructed to keep Hunt in line.  Further complicating the mission is that Hunt’s ex-lover and agent extraordinaire herself, Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), is working for the British on an assignment involving Lane, which may be at odds with Ethan’s.

Writer/Director Christopher McQuarrie has made a fast-paced, exciting film with superb action sequences, including great car chases, mano-a-mano fights, and even a helicopter chase.  Cruise still does his own stunts which, considering that he is 56, is amazing.  Hunt’s ex-wife, Julia (Michelle Monaghan), also has a few scenes.

It’s a 147-minute film, but the time flies.  It needs to be seen on the BS for maximum impact.  I think it’s “impossible” not to like it!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
