I was going to wait to watch this film as a rental, but my close friend Bruce (who I hope one day will post reviews for the blog) told me that it was really good. Rob and I saw it just before it left the theaters, and we both liked it a lot. Be forewarned that I am biased, since I am a huge Jennifer Lopez fan. I think she’s beautiful and she can act, sing, and dance with the best of them. She is one of the hardest-working women in the entertainment industry, and she’s the only star who has had both a #1 Album and a #1 Movie simultaneously! I also thought she was a terrific judge on American Idol. Unfortunately, Jennifer has been unlucky in love. (I hope her reuniting with Ben Affleck will work out this time.)
This film’s plot is much like “Notting Hill” (1999) in that a superstar and an ordinary person fall in love. It’s not as good as that classic film, but it’s heart-warming, funny, and Jennifer sings some really good songs while dancing in very revealing costumes. (Who could ask for more?) There’s also great chemistry between Wilson and Lopez.
Kat Valdez (Jennifer) is a superstar singer. She spends most of her time selling her brand on social media and almost never has a second to herself. She is on a big concert tour and has a hit song entitled “Marry Me.” At the end of the tour, at a big outdoor stadium, Kat will marry her famous singer fiancé, Bastian (Maluma), and, including the online viewers, there will be an audience of about 20 million!
A few minutes before the wedding, it gets posted on some website that Bastian has cheated! Kat is embarrassed and humiliated. Nearby in the audience are Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson), his daughter Lou (Chloe Coleman), and his close friend Parker (Sarah Silverman). Charlie is a divorced Dad who is a math teacher at an elementary school. At the concert, Charlie is holding up a sign that says “Marry Me.” Kat picks him out of the audience and impulsively asks Charlie to marry her! Charlie isn’t even into her, but he’s empathetic and doesn’t want to add to her humiliation by rejecting her, so he reluctantly goes on stage and gets married. (Their marriage won’t become legal, however, unless they file the papers.) The next day, Kat and her staff tell Charlie that, if he makes some appearances with Kat for about six months, their charade will end. Then Kat will donate a large sum of money to Charlie’s elementary school.
You know where this film is going, but it’s charming, funny, and very enjoyable while getting there. It’s a first-rate rom-com as well as a musical. It’s a MUST-SEE if you’re a Jennifer Lopez fan. Even if you’re not, you may become one after seeing this movie!
