After Robin and I finished watching the second season of “Goliath” (Amazon Prime – strongly recommended), we decided to watch a movie before getting involved in one of the numerous streaming shows on our watch list.  Our son, Noah, recommended “Kodachrome,” and we really enjoyed it.  Right now, it is in my Top 20 for 2018,  but it may not make the cut by December.  Although a Netflix original, paradoxically, the movie was shot using 35 mm Kodak film.

Ben (Ed Harris) is a world-famous photographer who only has a brief time to live because he has terminal cancer.  Ben has recently found four undeveloped rolls of Kodak film, which he wants to get processed before he dies so he can have one last exhibition of his work.  Ben is estranged from his son, Matt (Jason Sudeikis), since he abandoned the family when Matt was young.  Matt hates Ben’s guts and wants nothing to do with him.  Ben wants Matt to take a road trip with him to Parsons, Kansas which has the only lab left in the U.S. that develops Kodachrome film.  The lab will stop developing Kodachrome film in about 10 days, so time is of the essence.  Matt gets talked into going on the trip by Ben’s manager.  Also accompanying Ben and Matt is Ben’s very pretty nurse and personal assistant, Zooey (Elizabeth Olsen).

The movie primarily involves Ben and Matt’s relationship, but there are also interesting dynamics between Zooey and Ben as well as between Matt and Zooey.  It’s primarily a drama, but there’s plenty of humor, too.  Ed Harris gives an AAW performance and Sudeikis and Olsen are also excellent.  The sound track is good, although I am puzzled why it doesn’t include Paul Simon’s classic song, “Kodachrome.”  The movie also address the issue of changing technology and how, at times, it can affect art for the worse.  As for me, I like “Kodachrome” better than “Google Chrome!”

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
