This film is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by David Grann (2017). Writer/Director Martin Scorsese has faithfully told this amazing – although tragic – true story, which is as pure of an example of evil, racism, and greed as I can recall. It’s an excellent and entertaining movie, but to see this dark side of human nature for three-and-a-half hours is quite disturbing. Despite the unnerving nature of the film, it is still a MUST-SEE!
It’s the 1920’s and the Osage Nation is now living in Osage County, Oklahoma, after they had been evicted from their prior reservation. Somehow, by either Divine Intervention or exceptional luck, oil was discovered on their property. Very soon, the people of the Osage Nation are extremely wealthy, and the whites living in the county are quite envious. William King Hale (Robert De Niro) is a sociopath who has charmed both the Osage Nation and the whites. He is wealthy and wields significant power in the county.
Hale’s nephew, Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo Di Caprio), returns home from the war and starts living with his uncle. Hale has devised a diabolical and murderous scheme to eventually obtain all the land rights to the oil wells, bankrupting and eviscerating the Osage Nation. Hale gives Ernest a job as a chauffeur for the Osage, including Mollie (Lily Gladstone). Soon after they meet, they get married, and Hale’s plot is set into motion! I won’t say any more about what happens to avoid spoiling the plot, but be prepared to get sick to your stomach!
The film has excellent acting, a very interesting story, and beautiful cinematography (by Rodrigo Prieto). De Niro, Di Caprio, and Gladstone may all be nominated for Best Actor. As is typical of Scorsese films, they are way too long. (“Marty” is apparently so enamored with his footage that he can’t bear to cut a second of the movie!) This film would have been much better at 150 minutes instead of 3-&-1/2 hours. Nevertheless, it is currently my second-favorite movie of the year, behind “Oppenheimer” (which, in my opinion, was also too long).
Bottom Line: “Killers of the Flower Moon” makes me glad that I drive a Tesla!
