This was the last movie I needed to see that had an AA nomination for Best Picture.  I had seen the previews and I didn’t expect to like the movie.  A comedy/satire about Adolf Hitler seemed like a very difficult trick to pull off.  It turns out, however, that it’s a great movie and will definitely be in my Top 10 for 2020.  The movie is a MUST-SEE!

This film is set in Germany in the later days of  WWII.  Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis – no relation) is a ten-year-old boy who has bought the “party line.”  He wants to join the “Hitler Youth” and is about to spend a weekend at a Nazi training camp for young boys and girls.  He hates Jews, idolizes the Nazis, and his imaginary friend is none other than Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi).  (There are many very funny scenes when they interact.).

Jojo’s father is off to war and his mother, Rosie (Scarlett Johansson), is trying to do the best she can under the circumstances.  One day Jojo discovers a very pretty young woman, Elsa (Tomasin McKenzie – “Without a Trace”) hiding in a secret room in their house!  Jojo then is forced to integrate all the lies he believes about Jews with a real-life 3-D Technicolor Jew!  He also now realizes that his mother is part of the resistance and his father may even be too!  How Jojo’s humanity overcomes his Nazi indoctrination and racism is the essence of the film.  Roman Griffin Davis also gives an AAW performance.

The film is walking a razor’s edge, but I think it meets the challenge and writer/director Waititi deserves AAs for both Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.  (The film is based on the novel “Caging Skies” by Christine Leunes.)

Bottom Line: I found the film brilliant, funny, emotionally-compelling, and heart-warming.  If I were you I’d “hop to it” and see it at the theater before it’s too late.

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
