I’m a big fan of Rachel Brosnahan – the star of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” a terrific comedy/drama series on Amazon Prime.  In this thriller, Rachel has a serious role.  To her credit, you won’t find a shred of Mrs. Maisel in her performance.  She does a fine job, I just wish the movie was better.

The film takes place in the 1970’s.  Jean (Brosnahan) is married to Eddie, a criminal.  She doesn’t know much about what Eddie does, and she doesn’t want to know either.  She lives well – she has a nice house, fancy clothes, and no responsibilities.  Eddie is controlling and won’t let her drive or work, so she is very dependent on him.  She married young and doesn’t have a college degree.

One day Eddie shows up with a baby who Jean names Harry.  They obviously didn’t go through official adoption channels, since Jean had no clue this was going to happen.  Very shortly thereafter, a man shows up at the house and tells Rachel that she needs to leave immediately with Harry.  Eddie has done something and dangerous men want to find him and think that she may know where he is hiding.  Soon, a black man named Cal (Arinze Kene) arrives, and Rachel is told that Cal will be handling everything.  She needs to go with him and do everything he says.

Will Jean, Harry, and Cal stay alive?  Why is Cal helping her?  What did Eddie do?  Will Eddie stay alive, too?  There are four suspenseful scenes, including a good car chase, all totaling about 30 minutes, but the rest of the 2-hour movie drags.  The characters and their relationships just aren’t that interesting.  By the way, the title has nothing to do with the plot, at least as far as I can discern.  There is absolutely no comic relief either.

Bottom Line: Worth watching if you want to see Brosnahan in a serious role.  Otherwise, I’d pass.

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
