I hadn’t even heard of this movie, but one of my movie maven friends thought it was terrific, so I decided to see it.  It’s based on the novel “Firing Point,” which I hadn’t heard of, either.

Anyway, Capt. Joe Glass (Gerard Butler) is a newly-appointed captain of a submarine.  Another U.S. submarine is missing very near Russian waters, and Glass has been given the mission to find out what happened.  Glass soon discovers that the U.S. submarine has been sunk by a torpedo, but there’s a Russian sub very nearby that’s been sunk, too.

It turns out that the Russian Minister of Defense has launched a coup and has captured the Russian President.  An extremely complicated rescue mission is hurriedly planned by the US top-brass.  A small group of Navy seals is covertly sent into Russia, where the Russian President is being held captive.  Their mission is to extract the Russian President and then link up with Glass’ sub.  Glass’ sub, however, must sneak into Russian waters, which, at this location, is heavily seasoned with mines, sound sensors, etc.  The Minister of Defense is trying to start a “hot” war between Russia and the US, in order to consolidate his newly-assumed power, which potentially even could lead to a full-scale nuclear war!

The film ratchets up the suspense with each passing scene.  The screenplay is also better than you might expect for this type of film.  If you’re in the mood for an entertaining, suspenseful movie, which is currently “under the sonar,” you might want to see it!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
