This documentary (by Director Jesse Moss) is quite compelling and won the Sundance U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize!  The film chronicles the week at the “Boys State” program.  This is an annual event sponsored by the American Legion (since 1935) which draws 17-year-old high school students from all over the country to Austin, Texas, for an on-site laboratory experiment to teach the boys about the political process.  Notables who have previously participated in the program include Bill Clinton, Cory Booker, and Dick Cheney (but don’t let that dissuade you!)

When the boys arrive, they are randomly split into two parties, the Federalists and the Nationalists.  The parties have to develop a platform, choose a District Chair and a candidate for Governor.  The film follows Steven Garza (Governor) and Rene Otero (DC) for the Nationalists and Eddy Proietto (Governor) and Ben Feinstein (DC) for the Federalists.  The Nationalists are less conservative than the Federalists.  The main  contrasting issues on the platforms are the 2nd Amendment and abortion.

Do the DC’s play fair?  Do candidates lie to win?  When you mix human nature, teenagers and politics, interesting things happen.  This is a timely movie, since it’s a Presidential election year and the stakes are high.  If you are a political animal, it’s a must-see, but I think most of my “blog fans” out there will find it interesting.

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
