This film has mixed reviews, but my friend Arnie loved it and my two sons wanted to see it, so Rob, the boys, and I all went to a matinee performance on Thanksgiving.  I never was that into “Queen,” but I was familiar with their big hits.  I am pleased to say it’s a very good movie with a terrific soundtrack.  If you don’t like it you’ve got “a hole in your soul” – the great Al Kooper.

The film chronicles how Farrokh Bulsara joins up with a band (“Smile”) that needs a lead singer.  Lead guitarist Brian May (Gwilym Lee), bassist John Deacon (Joseph Mazello) and drummer Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy) are all very talented musicians.  Farrokh convinces them to make him a part of the band, morphs into the flamboyant Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek), and changes the band’s name to “Queen.”  What I found most interesting is the intra-band tension between the four members.

The film tells the story of Freddie’s romantic relationship with his eventual wife, Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton), and his awakening to his homosexuality, which ended their marriage.  However, they still remained very close friends, and he left her most of his estate.  Rami Malek gives an AAW performance as Freddie!

The movie covers the rise of the band and the soundtrack is filled with many of their great songs and some of their great performances.  The film ends with their legendary performance at Wembley Stadium at the “Live Aid” concert in 1985.  Many music critics consider that 20 minute set to be the greatest live 20 minutes in Rock’N’Roll history!  Some critics rave that Freddie was an even greater front-man than Mick Jagger!

Freddie died of AIDS in 1991, but his legend lingers on.  Rock’N’Roll greats often die young, and, tragically, as Freddie would sing it, “Another One Bites The Dust.”

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
