This film is a very interesting French love story between two elderly women – it received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Motion Picture.  I didn’t think it was that good, but it’s still worth watching if the plot interests you.  I won’t be able to say much about the plot or I will spoil the movie for you, so this review will be brief.

Nina (Barbara Sukowa) and Madeleine (Martine Chevallier) have been lovers for about 20 years.  They live in the same apartment building, in two different apartments on the same floor, posing as neighbors.  They share the apartments and spend their nights together.  Although in their 60’s, they still have a very sexual relationship.  They plan to move from Paris to Rome, where they originally met, to enjoy their retirement.  Nina is ready to leave at any time, but Madeleine is dragging her feet selling her apartment.

Nina doesn’t have a family, but Madeleine is a widow with a son Frederic (Jerome Varanfrrain), daughter Anne (Lea Drucker), and grandson.  Madeleine has kept her sexual orientation and love affair with Nina from them – as well as her husband, prior to his death.  Anne and Madeleine have a close relationship, but Frederic is cold, distant, and hostile towards Madeleine and accuses her of cheating on his father.  Madeleine tells Nina that she told her children that she was moving, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it when she had the chance.

An event occurs that causes an upheaval in their relationship and future plans.  The film emphasizes the problems with keeping secrets in relationships.  (Secrets also poison a psychotherapeutic relationship.  I tell all my therapy patients that if they keep secrets from me, they are wasting their time and money.)

I found the movie interesting and at times touching, and it had some suspenseful moments as well.  As a film depicting a type of relationship not often discussed in society, it does a good job of helping you empathize and understand the pair and the reality of their life as the “Two of Us.”

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
