This is the first summer blockbuster movie that I have seen, and it’s a darn good one!  It’s a worthy sequel to the classic 1966 “Twister,” starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton.  The film has an interesting story, as well as very good chemistry between the leads.  The terrific special effects highlight the beauty and mystery of twisters, as well as how terrifying, dangerous, and destructive they can be.

Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is a graduate student studying physics at an Oklahoma college.  She is doing a project on how to diminish a tornado’s destructive force.  She has four friends helping her, among them her friend, Javi (Andy Ramos).  In order to test her project’s thesis, they have to get very close to the twister and shoot some chemicals right up into it.  Unfortunately, the tornado is much bigger than they thought and her method doesn’t work.  They are too close to the Twister, and, in a rather terrifying sequence, three of her friends die.

Kate is wracked with survivor guilt.  Five years later, she is living in N.Y.C., working in the weather department of a TV station.  Ravi meets up with her and convinces her that, with his new equipment, they can improve her method and possibly achieve success.  She agrees to spend a week out in Oklahoma with his team, as Oklahoma is being pounded by a much higher frequency of tornados than usual.

When they arrive at the primary location of Twister formation, Kate meets Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), who chases tornadoes and has a huge YouTube following.  He is a thrill-seeking cowboy who shoots firecrackers into the twisters.  There is some friendly competition between them, as well as sexual tension, which builds up throughout the film.

Glen Powell dominates the film, in a good way.  He is a true movie star, with great charisma – and he can act, too!  Edgar-Jones also does a good job.  Maura Tierney is terrific (as usual) in a few short scenes as Kate’s mother.

The movie needs to be seen on the BS – it will lose a lot of impact if you were to see it on your home TV.  Don’t make the mistake of thinking that “Twisters” is just a bunch of “hot air!”

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
