Ticket To Paradise: Great Stars, But Just Mediocre Rom-Com

Julia Roberts and George Clooney are charismatic, iconic stars, who are even good friends in real life.  They have been paired together in four prior films, among them “Ocean’s Eleven” (2004) and “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” (2002).  Roberts and Clooney have great chemistry and their performances are first rate, but there is only so much star power can do with a so-so script.

Georgia (played by Roberts) and David (played by Clooney) were married for five years, but got divorced many years ago.  They started out madly in love, but now they hate each other.  While married, they had a daughter, Lily (played by Kaitlyn Dever).  Lily is graduating from a prestigious law school and both of them will be at the graduation ceremony.  Amazingly enough, they meet on the plane and have adjacent seats.  Their conversation consists primarily of funny, sarcastic zingers.  This banter continues during the graduation ceremony, as well.

Before starting out at her first job at a top-notch law firm, Kaitlyn and her best friend Wren (played by a terrific Billie Lourd) decide to go to Bali for a final fling before real life starts.  Almost immediately after their arrival in Bali, Kaitlyn falls madly in love with a handsome seaweed farmer, Gede (played by Maxime Bouttier).  Kaitlyn impulsively decides, after only a few days, to remain in Bali and marry Gede.  Understandably, Georgia and David freak out that Lily is about to throw away everything she has worked so hard to obtain.  They decide to join forces and develop a diabolical plan to bust Lily and Gede up.

The main problem with the film is that Lily and Gede are rather dull and their romantic scenes are slow.  Nevertheless, there are sufficient laughs along the way to make the film entertaining enough to watch.  Bali is beautiful, so the setting of Bali also raises the movie another notch.

Bottom Line: Two great stars, a decent number of laughs, and great scenery make it a solid rental.  It’s at the theater now (if you have nothing better that you want to see).  Who knows, you might run into Eddie Money and get in for free!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
