Imagine how you would feel if you started your freshman year in college and everyone began calling you by the wrong name and acting like you’re friends? That’s what happens to open this MUST-SEE and fascinating documentary by Tim Wardle. In the 1980’s, three identical Jewish triplets (Eddy, David, and Robert) were separated at birth and placed in different families: one upper-class, one middle-class, and one blue-collar. When they are about 20, they learn about each other’s existence and start hanging out.
They soon become celebrities, appearing on various talk shows. They are very much alike in many ways, such as mannerisms, cigarette brand, tastes in women, food, and music, etc. At first the film is amusing fluff, but, about half-way through, it takes a “hair-pin turn” and addresses some very interesting questions.
As a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, I found the film fascinating, although I think just about everyone will enjoy and learn something from it. It’s my favorite documentary of 2018 so far, just nosing out “RBG.”
This documentary has been out for about one month, so it might leave the theaters soon. If you are interested in seeing it, I would put this one at the top of the list. If someone in the movie line mistakes you for somebody else, you might want to take it more seriously than you usually do! (That explains why I keep getting mistaken for Ryan Gosling!)
