“The Rip” is an original Netflix movie, and I wonder why it wasn’t initially released in the theaters because it’s good enough and considerably better than your typical streaming-only film! It stars the winning combination of Matt Damon & Ben Affleck, and has some excellent action sequences, considerable suspense, as well as being a mystery!
The movie starts out with a “bang” when Jacki (Lina Escro), a well-respected police Captain for the Miami Police Department, gets shot by two masked men. Jackie was working with a confidential informant, and she was getting very close to a major bust. The C/I was scared that her cover was about to be blown, and she wanted out ASAP! Lt. Dane Dumars (Damon) and his close friend, Sgt. J.D. Byrne (Affleck), are also part of the elite task force headed by Jackie, and they are shaken up by her murder. They both have been cops for a long time, and Byrne seems a bit burnt out. After Jackie’s death, Dumars and Byrne get harshly questioned about the task force by their superiors, implying that they are somehow to blame for Jackie’s murder. The task force works busting “stash” houses where money is stored from illegal drug sales by the cartel or other drug dealers. The standard protocol is that the team raids the stash house, immediately reports the found money, subsequently counts up the money, then “rips” the money from the house and brings the entire stash back to the Department. There are rumors, however, that some of the cops are “dirty” and are keeping some of the funds for themselves.
Dumars gets a tip about a stash house, so he and his team head off to make “the rip.” At the house is Desi (Sasha Calle), who informs them that she is just living at her grandmother’s house while it is in probate. She claims ignorance about any money being stored there. Dumars and Byrne discover much more money than anticipated, which is very probably being hidden there by one of the cartels. Dumars goes against protocol and doesn’t immediately report the found money to the Department. Instead, he instructs members of his team to first count the money, which will take considerable time. Byrne strongly disagrees with this decision, and they have a big argument about it. The house phone soon rings, informing Dumars that, if the team doesn’t leave in 30 minutes, they will die. The half-hour expires, and the team gets viciously attacked by multiple men with machine guns. Who is attacking them, the cartel or dirty cops? Is one of the members on Dumars’ team a mole, possibly even Dumars himself?
I won’t say any more about the plot, but it’s a fast-moving, gritty, and entertaining action movie, with a well-written screenplay. If you’re in the mood for a good action movie with two popular and likeable stars, this is a good one to check out. Plus, since it’s free, you can’t get “ripped off!”
