One of my favorite films of 1967 was “Bonnie and Clyde,” directed by the legendary Arthur Penn. Bonnie and Clyde were bank robbers in the 1930’s who became celebrity-folk heroes. The movie starred Warren Beatty (as Clyde Barrow) and Faye Dunaway (as Bonnie Parker). I so loved this film that I even named my two pet cats “Bonnie” and “Clyde!” I developed such a crush on Faye Dunaway that I was moved to poetry! (“I’d like to runaway with Dunaway!”) If you haven’t seen it, it’s a MUST-SEE and I’d recommend watching it either before or after “The Highwaymen,” to see how differently these famous criminals were portrayed. “The Highwaymen” isn’t as good a movie as “Bonnie and Clyde,” but it’s still well worth seeing. It’s a true story about how Bonnie and Clyde met their violent end.
It’s the 1930’s, and Bonnie and Clyde are on a spree in the Southeast, robbing banks, stealing cars, and killing just about anyone who gets in their way, or even just for fun! In real life, they were cold-blooded, psychopathic serial killers who needed to be stopped. They were outsmarting the FBI and local police forces at every turn. In desperation, Texas Governor Ma Ferguson (Kathy Bates) agrees to re-activate two former Texas Rangers (now in their 50’s): Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) and Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson). The Texas Rangers had been disbanded many years previously, and these two are regarded by the FBI and police as dinosaurs who are useless and obsolete.
The film primarily involves the relationship between Hamer (leader and silent type) and Gault (talker and comic relief). It’s wonderful to see them act off each other. They are much better trackers and detectives than the FBI and eventually take Bonnie and Clyde out!
Bottom Line: “The Highwaymen” may “steal” your heart!
