I hated the Robert Redford/ Mia Farrow version of the book so much I couldn’t even imagine that the classic by F. Scott Fitzgerald could ever be made into a good movie. I didn’t bother to see it when it was in the theaters, thinking it would probably suck. Furthermore, I usually don’t like Baz Luhrmann (Director) movies.
However, I was very pleasantly surprised. Robin and I both really enjoyed the film. The main difference between the two versions is that DiCaprio (Gatsby) and Mulligan (Daisy) can really act! Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway) also does a fine job.
Luhrmann re-creates the 1922 prohibition era well and the pace is good.
If you would like to see another and actually interesting version of this classic novel, this film is a good bet.
Rating-7.5 (good movie, well worth renting)
