Co-Written and Directed by Michael Angelo Covino, “Splitsville” ‘split’ from the theaters after only about a week. It’s a shame because it’s a pretty funny film, with terrific acting and a nice message.
Carey (Kyle Marvin – Co-Writer) and Ashley (Adria Arjona) are driving to visit their close friends. They are singing songs and seem to be having a good time. Ashley has the inspiration to give Carey a blowjob while he is driving, but, as you might anticipate, this mission does not “come” out the way they had hoped. Soon, Ashley tells Carey that she has been unfaithful, is sexually-dissatisfied, and wants a divorce. They have only been married about a year and a half, and they don’t have any children. Carey freaks out, exits the car, and runs the rest of the way to their friends’ lovely lakeside home.
Julia (Dakota Johnson) and Paul (Covino) seem to be very happily married. Paul is an extremely wealthy real estate entrepreneur, but he often spends nights in the city, supposedly for business. He is Carey’s best friend, and they have known each other for many years. While telling his surprised friends that Ashley has been cheating on him and wants a divorce, Julia and Paul reveal that they have an open marriage. They suggests that perhaps Ashley might not leave him if he offers this option to her. Both of them tell Carey that they are fine with this arrangement and that neither of them are having any problems with jealousy.
Paul soon leaves for a business trip to the city. Julia confides to Carey that she suspects that Paul is actually screwing women in the city rather than doing business. She isn’t as content about their open marriage as she had claimed while Paul was there. In fact, she hasn’t even slept with anyone else yet!
I can’t say any more about the plot, but the four friends have interesting adventures and often get themselves into very funny situations. Some scenes don’t work, or are way too long, but there are many scenes that are very funny and some scenes have intense and thought-provoking dialogue. The acting by the four leads is outstanding. Since it has already left the theaters, I would put it on the Amazon Prime or Apple TV+ watchlist so that you can see it when it becomes available as a rental. For men, as a bonus, there aren’t many women who are as beautiful as Dakota Johnson, but Adria Arjona is one of them!
