This rom-com has only a 62% Audience score and a 74% Critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, but Robin and I liked it more than these scores would indicate.  It has a formulaic and predictable plot, but it’s still very funny and Zoey Deutch’s performance is a joy to watch.  The movie probably wouldn’t be nearly as enjoyable without her verve and comedic talent.  This film takes place during the Christmas season in NYC, so let’s consider this a Christmas movie.  The film is based on the novel of the same name by Melissa Hill.

Rachel (Zoey Deutch) is a chef and co-owner of a bakery/restaurant.  She has been seriously involved for several years with Gary (Ray Nicholson), who is a somewhat self-absorbed tattoo artist.  Rachel loves him, but he hasn’t quite gotten his act together, so she is ambivalent about whether she would marry him (if he ever proposed to her, that is).

Ethan (Kendrick Sampson) is a college professor who has written a failed novel, but he has an idea for a second one and would like to take time away from the university to write it.  He is a widower with a young daughter, Daisy (Leah Jeffries).  His girlfriend, Vanessa (Shay Mitchell), is flying in from LA and Ethan is planning to propose to her.

Ethan and Daisy go to Tiffany’s to pick out an engagement ring for Vanessa that is expensive and beautiful.  Gary goes to Tiffany’s at the same time to buy a Christmas present for Rachel, a much-less-expensive set of earrings.  As fate would have it, the Tiffany boxes get switched and the women get the wrong boxes.  When Rachel opens her box, and both Gary and Rachel see the ring, Gary proposes to her and Rachel accepts.  Vanessa, hoping for an engagement ring, is disappointed about only getting the earrings.

Rachel soon bumps into Ethan and Daisy, where they also meet Gary.  Ethan then goes on a mission to get his ring back from Gary, but spends considerable time with Rachel while doing so.  We all know how this will turn out, but it still is often very funny and charming, mainly because of Deutch.

Robin and I watched it in the evening, but, in retrospect, I wish we had watched it over “Breakfast!”

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
