This film has a 98% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and a 92% critics score, and it deserves them! It’s a MUST-SEE (possibly unless you’re blind)! This is my favorite movie of the year (by a wide margin), and I usually don’t even enjoy Marvel movies much. It deserves an AA nomination for Best Film, but action/martial arts movies usually don’t get nominated. It’s a hybrid between “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (which won AA Best Foreign Language Film in 2001 for its exquisite martial arts scenes) and “Lost Horizon” (1973), but this movie is very original as well. The Cinematography (Bill Pope) is phenomenal, so it really MUST be seen on the BS! The Director/Co-Writer (Destin Daniel Cretton) achieved great performances from all the lead actors, and the screenplay is superior to any comic book movie that I can remember.
Shaun (Simu Liu) and his friend Katy (Awkwafina) are valet parkers. Neither one appears to have much ambition. One day, while they are riding a bus, about 5 assassins attack Shaun. In an amazing martial arts sequence, he prevails. It turns out that he is really Shang-Chi and he learned martial arts when he was a boy in China.
“The Mandarin (aka Wai Wenwu, played by Tong Leunge Chiu,) is a power-hungry narcissist who has wreaked havoc all over the world. He has taken possession of ten rings, and, when he wears them, he is invincible and immortal. Thanks to these powers, he has already lived for 1000 years! Apparently, for some unknown reason, he wants to take possession of a pendant that Shaun wears. Shaun also gets a postcard from his sister, from whom he has been estranged for many years, informing him that she wants to see him. She is living somewhere in Asia, so Shaun and Katy then leave the U.S. to meet up with his sister.
I won’t reveal any more about the plot, but it’s a very good one with complex family dynamics and well-developed characters. The CGI is also first-rate. I give “Ten Rings” 10 stars!
