This is an unusual movie, co-written and directed by Aneesh Chaganty, because most of the film footage takes place on either a computer or cell phone screen. I’ve never seen a film like this before, and I thought it was creative and absorbing.
David Kim (John Cho) is a widower, raising his 16-year-old daughter, Margot (Michelle La), in a Northern California suburb. One night, she fails to come home, and, by the next evening, he considers her to be missing. David contacts the police, and the investigation is led by Detective Rosemary Vick (Debra Messing). David puts his trust in Rosemary, but he doesn’t want to feel helpless and powerless, so he starts his own search – primarily on his own computer, as well as Michelle’s laptop and cell phone. (David is much more skilled on the computer than I am, having numerous windows on various sites open simultaneously!) The movie title is a play on words, since there are two searches going on simultaneously – one out in the world and the other via a computer search. Like most parents with teenagers, David soon realizes how little he really knew about his daughter.
The odds of finding a kidnapped victim diminish rapidly as time progresses, so considerable suspense builds up as the days pass. The film is only 102 minutes, and it moves along at a nice clip.
If you’re “searching” for an interesting movie to see, this one won’t disappoint! It will work fine as a rental, but it’s good enough to be seen now on the BS.
