It’s almost July 4th, and the hot dogs are “getting a hard-on” with the anticipation of being purchased for the holiday and going off to the “The Great Beyond.” The food and condiments at the store are under the illusion that a wonderful life awaits them out in “The Great Beyond,” rather than the horrible truth that they will be sliced, boiled, and chewed to death! The only items that know the truth are the non-perishables.
On the shelf, awaiting their chance to be “released” from their plastic packages, are the main characters, 3 hot dogs (Frank – Seth Rogan; Barry – Michael Cera; and Carl – Jonah Hill) and a really “hot” bun (Brenda – Kristen Wiig). Frank and Brenda have been flirting quite provocatively, and Frank can’t wait to “fill” Brenda’s bun.
The film primarily involves Frank’s odyssey to learn the truth. The film has an underlying atheistic stance, although there are also scenes leaving open the possibility of other spiritual dimensions. There are also humorous references to the Arab/Israeli conflict and sexual identity issues.
The cartoon, as expected, is filled with sexual jokes and marijuana and other substance abuse jokes. The film, a couple of times, is outrageously funny, cute, and consistently amusing, although it drags occasionally.
It’s a funny and raunchy cartoon with an excellent ensemble cast, including Ed Norton and Salma Hayek. If you “hunger” for this kind of movie I’d “come and get it!”
