This Korean-language subtitled movie has won many festival awards and it will very probably receive AA and Golden Globe nominations for Best Foreign Film. The Screenwriter/Director (Bon Joon-ho) is very talented and someone to “watch!” I can’t say much about the plot without spoiling it, but suffice it to say that it’s a very creative and unique film. It’s a comedy/satire/drama/horror movie, with the primary theme of class struggle.
A family of four live in poverty in a cramped basement. All of them are unemployed, although they make a few bucks folding pizza boxes. The son, Kevin, gets a job tutoring the pretty teenage daughter of a very wealthy family of four (the Parks), the father of whom is the CEO of a large company. Kevin then cons Park’s wife into hiring his sister as an art teacher for their son. Soon after that, Kevin and his sister con the Parks into firing Park’s chauffeur and house-keeper, replacing them with their father and mother. Now the four members of the poor family all have great jobs and are living large. The Parks are happy, too. Unfortunately for our “parasites,” it’s too good to last.
The film starts out quite funny, with the poor family of con artists taking the Parks for a “ride,” but it turns into a suspense-filled drama after about an hour. The tension ratchets up until a rather intense, chaotic climax. The film is occasionally sluggish, but there are many terrific scenes which compensate for this flaw. The acting is excellent and the cinematographer (Hong Kyung-pyo) is very creative.
The film is a shocker and will leave you breathless. You’ll be thinking about it for quite a while after it ends. I predict that most of you who decide to see it will have a “symbiotic” relationship with the film.
