If you are a fan of horror movies, this is a really good one. There’s plenty of suspense, an interesting plot, and excellent performances. The film will definitely give you “the creeps,” as a good horror film does. It has some similarities to Jonathan Demme’s iconic “The Silence of the Lambs,” but only a little. While it isn’t a Top 20 film, it is a very good one for its genre. Robin thought it was “too scary for me,” but she doesn’t like horror films. (I’ll pay the price for making her see it!)
The film starts out with a short sequence: A car pulls up to a house. A young girl leaves the house to see what’s going on and engages with “Longlegs” (Nicolas Cage). We don’t know what happens during that encounter after that.
The movie then fast-forwards to the 1990″s. Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) is a rookie FBI agent who catches a serial killer on her first case! The FBI tests her and it turns out she has some psychic abilities. She then teams up with Agent Carter (Blair Underwood) to catch an even more “successful” and ruthless serial killer. He leaves cryptic notes signed “Longlegs” at the scenes of the murders. It seems “Longlegs” somehow gets the father of a family to kill his wife and kids and then kill himself. This has happened over ten times and the FBI is still clueless. Somehow, Lee also has some psychic connection to “Longlegs.”
Lee has early childhood issues that make her chronically anxious. Her relationship with her hyper-religious mother, Ruth (Alicia Witt), is quite strained. The film primarily involves Lee’s search to catch “Longlegs,” who happens to worships Satan. Lee eventually figures out that “Longlegs” has an accomplice, but who?
On the whole, I think the film did what it intended to do. It’s creepy and scary, but not so much that you need to cover your eyes (although there are a few short gruesome scenes.) If you like horror movies, I would make “long strides” to get to the theater, since it needs the B.S. in order to be sufficiently scary. If you don’t enjoy horror films, then I’d pass.
