I  thought “Trainwreck” (2015) staring Amy Schumer and Bill Hayder was the best comedy that year.  This film is another pretty funny movie starring Amy, but it’s not nearly as good.  Nevertheless, it’s amusing throughout and often very funny, so it’s worth streaming or renting when it becomes available.

Renee Bennett (Amy) is an overweight woman who is insecure and dissatisfied with her looks.  Although smart, warm, caring, and funny, she has low self-esteem, and one reason for this is that she isn’t pretty.  Her most intense wish is to be beautiful, which she thinks will transform her dull and dreary life into an exciting one.  She speculates that doors that are now closed to her will spring wide open.

While at the dry cleaner, she strikes up a conversation with Ethan (Rory Scoval) and they start dating.  He’s a great guy who sees the inner Renee and all the wonderful things she “brings to the table.”  One day, at a spin class, Renee falls off her bike and bangs her head.  When she comes to and looks at herself in the mirror, even though she still looks exactly the same, she is now under the delusion that she has been magically transformed into a woman with super-model looks!

Brimming with confidence, with the knowledge that she is gorgeous, Renee lands her dream job as the receptionist for “Lily LeClare,” a major cosmetics corporation, where she gets to work closely with Avery LeClaire (Michelle Williams), the CEO.  (Known for her skill as a dramatic actress, Michelle is very funny in this role, demonstrating that she can do just about anything.)

On the whole, it’s a funny and enjoyable movie, although it gets preachy at the end, hitting you over the head with its message.

OMG, I just saw myself in the mirror, and now I look almost like Clive Owen, only a little better!  I’m married, so I can’t have nearly as much fun as I could if I was single, but I’m pretty sure I’ll get lucky tonight!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
