This film was nominated for best picture so I decided to see it before the AW on Sunday.  It is a creative and unusual sci-fi movie.

Joaquin Phoenix (Theodore) is having a difficult time coping with his pending divorce from Catherine (Rooney Mara).  He buys a sophisticated Artificial Intelligence Operating system and gives it a female voice. The system decides its name is Samantha (Scarlett Johansson-a disembodied voice).

Over time the relationship between Theodore and Samantha evolves into an intense romance. Samantha, however, is also evolving at a very rapid rate, in ways humans can’t understand.

The screenplay is very clever in spots, there are some very interesting scenes, and Phoenix and Johansson do a really good job.  I could not, however, buy off on their sexual relationship.

The movie raises some interesting and provocative questions about what makes a relationship and what we are looking for from them. It also raises the question about our increasing dependence on computers.

I liked it better than Robin did.
