This film is beyond absurd, but, if you go with the flow, you will “LOL.” I haven’t laughed so much at a movie in a long time. I think it has a good chance of winding up a cult-classic in about 20 years. I am biased, since Rachel McAdams is my favorite actress, but Robin really liked it, too.
Annie and Max (McAdams and Jason Bateman) love to play games like Scrabble, Charades, and Pictionary. On a regular basis, they host a game night with two other couples. There used to be a third couple, but they got divorced. The ex-husband, Gary (Jesse Plemons), still lives next door, but he had a “personality-ectomy” so he isn’t invited anymore, much to Gary’s chagrin.
Unexpectedly, Max’s super-successful and extremely wealthy brother, Brooks (Kyle Chandler), arrives and decides that their routine game-night doesn’t have enough pizzazz and arranges an elaborate game-night at his rented mansion nearby. Max has an inferiority complex related to his more successful brother, and it is hypothesized that Max and Annie’s inability to conceive may be based on this psychological conflict.
Once Brook’s game starts, all kinds of absurd and crazy things happen, much of it extremely funny, with slap-stick, dead-pan, and funny lines. McAdams and Bateman are perfect in their roles and they have great chemistry. Despite the mad-cap, farcical nature of the film, it nevertheless addresses serious themes, such as the pain of failed romantic relationships and sibling rivalry. It’s a fun night at the movies, if you’re “game” for it!
