Emilia Pérez: A Wild & Crazy Musical! (Netflix)

This film has one of the most original & crazy plots I have ever seen!  It’s gotten amazing reviews and will probably win the Golden Globes and Academy Awards for Best Foreign Picture.  It received 10 GG nominations, a record!  It is written and directed by Jacques Audiard (French) and inspired by a character from the 2018 novel “Ecoute,” by Boris Razon.  In addition to the unusual plot, the movie has many songs, some of which are accompanied by dancing.  The movie was filmed in France, but most of it takes place in Mexico City, via CGI, and it features an international cast.

Manitas Del Monte (trans actress Karla Sofia Gascón) is a male cartel drug lord who longs to be female.  He retains a great lawyer, Rita (Zoe Saldana), and offers her enough money so that she will never have to work again.  Her mission is to help him choose a doctor to perform the transition surgery.  Manitas has a wife, Jessi (Selena Gomez), and two children.  Rita will also help his wife and children settle in Switzerland, at an expensive villa.  Jessi and the children will think Manitas has died.  After the surgery and the settlement of Manitas’ family, Rita does her own thing for a while.

Four years later, Manitas, now Emilia Pérez (Karla Sofia Gascón performing a dual role), needs Rita’s help again.  She is happy being female, but is miserable because she misses her children.  She enlists Rita in a plan to move her family from Switzerland to a villa in Mexico City.  In addition, there are many songs, some with dancing.  I liked a few musical numbers, but I didn’t like this aspect of the movie too much (although Robin did.)

I won’t say any more about the plot, but I anticipate that Gascón will win the AA for Best Actress in a Musical.  It’s free on Netflix and worth a look.  If you aren’t into it, you can watch Vikings Valhalla, which I am binge watching now (also on Netflix).

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
