Dave’s Favorite Films of 2018!

The Academy nominated three films for “Best Picture” that didn’t make my list, “Roma,” “The Favourite,” and “Vice.”  Click on these titles for my reviews of “Roma” and “The Favourite,” which I think were over-hyped and over-rated.  I saw “Vice,” but I didn’t review it because I didn’t like it enough to bother.  I’m no Dick Cheney fan, but this movie made him appear to be evil incarnate.  I reviewed every film on my list, so you can click the titles below for those reviews, too.

Anyway, for better or for worse, here are my favorite films of the year.

  1.  “BlacKkKlansman” – Works on every level – A Spike Lee masterpiece!
  2.  “Green Book” – A fascinating true story, terrific screenplay, and great acting.
  3.  “Black Panther” – Arguably the best super-hero movie ever!
  4.  “Bohemian Rhapsody” – AAW performance by Rami Malek – interesting story about “Queen” and a great soundtrack.
  5.  “Private Life” – Great Netflix drama – as real as it gets.  AAW performances by Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn.
  6. “A Star Is Born” – Terrific re-make of the film classic.  Hook-filled soundtrack and AAW performances by Cooper and Gaga.
  7.  “Leave No Trace” – Interesting story about a father and daughter living “off the grid” – over-looked AAW performances by Thomasin McKenzie and Ben Foster.
  8. “Crazy Rich Asians” – Best romantic comedy of the year.
  9. “A Simple Favor” – A dark comedy mystery.  Over-looked AAW performance by Anna Kendrick.
  10. “Alpha” – Best cinematography of any movie this year.  Great story about a boy and a wolf.

Favorite Documentaries:

  1.  “RBG”
  2.  “Three Identical Strangers”

Favorite Animated Film: “Incredibles 2”

Favorite Foreign Film: “Raazi” – Indian spy thriller

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
