This has been a crazy year.  I haven’t been to a movie theater since March 2020.  I have no conviction about how the Academy will vote, except for the Best Actor category.  Therefore, I will only give my choices for the for the categories that I care about.  These are the films I would have voted if for if I were a member of the Academy.  (Amazingly, I still haven’t been invited!)  I saw every film except “Mank” in the Best Picture Category and “The Mole Agent” and “Time” in the documentary category.  Robin and I tried to watch “Mank” twice, but we gave up each time after about 30 minutes.  If it’s a great movie, then we “didn’t get it!”

Here are my choices.

  1. Best Actor:  Chadwick Boseman – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
  2. Best Supporting Actor:  Lakeith Stanfield – Judas and the Black Messiah
  3. Best Actress:  Carey Mulligan – Promising Young Woman
  4. Best Supporting Actress:  Glenn Close – Hillbilly Elegy
  5. Best Director:  Emerald Fennell – Promising Young Woman
  6. Best Documentary:  Crip Camp
  7. Best Picture:  Judas and the Black Messiah
  8. Best Adapted Screenplay:  Ramin Bahrani – The White Tiger
  9. Best Original Screenplay:  Aaron Sorkin – The Trial of the Chicago 7

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
