This film, by Writer/Director Christy Hall (Writer of “It Ends With Us,” starring Blake Lively but then followed by her now-infamous sexual harassment accusation against her co-star, Justin Baldoni), is much better than most Netflix movies. Originally conceived as a stage-play, Hall has written a terrific adaptation for the screen.
The film has only two actors: Girlie (Dakota Johnson – daughter of Don Johnson & Melanie Griffith) and cab driver Clark (Sean Penn). Girlie takes a cab from JFK to her apartment in Manhattan, driven by Clark. The ride (and the film) is about 90 minutes due to an accident which adds about 45 minutes to the trip.
Since the movie is only about the cab ride, the acting needs to be excellent in order for the film to hold your interest, which – fortunately – it is. Over the ride, each one reveals more and deeper truths about themselves, and, over the 90-minute trip, they somehow establish a profound connection. It seems almost impossible for this to happen, but the movie pulls it off quite believably.
Robin and I both enjoyed the movie, as well as Girlie & Clark’s journey of self-discovery together. Plus, with it on Netflix, you won’t have to “hitch a ride” to see it!
