Crime 101: Terrific Crime Thriller!

This film-noir-crime thriller is a MUST-SEE!  I liked it even better than “Send Help!”  The plot is interesting, creative, and the performances by the leads are uniformly excellent.  Writer/Director Bart Layton has adapted the screenplay from a short story of the same name (“Crime 101,” 2021) written by Don Winslow, an excellent crime books author.

Mike Davis (Chris Hemsworth) is a thief, working under a crime boss, “Money” (Nick Nolte).  Mike choses the victims, as well as plans and executes the robberies.  “Money” gets a cut, although, at first, it’s not clear why.  They have been working together for a long time, and Mike has never been caught or hurt anyone in the robberies.  Mike robs two men transporting what appear to be stolen diamonds, but something goes wrong, so he has to abort the mission.  He reports back to “Money,” who understands, but “Money” wants Mike to get “back on the horse” and rob a high-end jewelry store.  After this botched robbery, Mike now thinks this next robbery is too risky (even though he previously planned it).  All Mike’s robberies occur near the 101 Freeway, hence the film’s title.  “Money” decides to hire Ormon (Barry Keoghan) to take Mike’s place in the jewelry store robbery.  The problem is that Ormon is a violent sociopath.

Sharon Colvin (Halle Berry) works for a company that insures high-net-worth individuals in case they are robbed of their expensive art, jewelry, etc.  She has been very successful, has worked there for many years, and has been promised a well-deserved promotion to partner shortly.

Police Detective Lou Lubesnick (Mark Ruffalo) is convinced that the 101 robberies are all committed by the same person, since they have a distinct pattern.  He is obsessed with catching the criminal and has spent years unsuccessfully pursuing this goal.  Lou’s boss is at the end of his rope with Lou wasting so much time trying to catch the 101 robber and not closing other important cases.

I won’t say much more about the plot, but all these characters interact with each other in interesting ways.  Mike also develops a romantic interest in Maya (Monica Barbaro – Joan Baez in “A Complete Unknown”).  Lou gets very close to catching Mike, and the last 30 minutes are very tense, suspenseful, and exciting.  There are a few possible ways the situation can resolve, and it’s quite uncertain how it will all play out.  As a bonus, there are two great car chases.

I wouldn’t miss “Crime 101,” since it’s a “jewel” of a movie!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
