This is the first black super-hero movie, and it’s breaking many attendance records. The film is a source of pride for the African-American community and people of color world-wide! It’s a terrific film which deserves its accolades.
The Black Panther comic book character was created in 1966 by Stan Lee (Script) and Jack Kirby (Art). T’Challa/Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) is the King of the African paradise nation of Wakanda. This nation is much more technologically-advanced than any other country due to it having exclusive possession of an amazing extra-terrestrial mineral, vibranium. The nation keeps its technology hidden from the rest of the world and just tries to mind its own business and stay safe. Wakanda has not tried to rectify the injustices people of color have suffered in the US and other places. T’Challa became the Black Panther, via ingestion of a special, ceremonial herb, which gives him super-powered strength, speed, and reflexes.
Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) decides to challenge T’Challa for the throne. He is a very formidable villain who wants to use Wakanda’s technology to conquer all other nations and subjugate the current oppressors of people of color. Killmonger is filled with hate and is hell-bent on revenge! Can T’Challa and his allies defeat this evil foe? Will Wakanda choose to change its isolationist policies?
The Director/Co-Writer Ryan Cooger has done a terrific job. The film has an interesting plot and creates a sense of wonder. The ensemble cast is terrific. There is excellent character development – the main characters even have subtle nuances, which is an amazing feat for a super-hero film! The special effects are excellent, and the cinematography (by Rachel Morrison) is spectacular. The costumes (by Ruth Carter) will almost surely win the AA!
The film also has three important female characters: Nakia (Lupita Nyung’o) – T’Challa’s ex (who he’s still into); his sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright), who invents technologically-advanced gadgets and weapons; and Okoye (Danai Guria), who is a really bad-ass warrior in the Wakandan Royal Honor Guard. (I wouldn’t want to get on her bad-side!)
I’d “leap” into the theaters to see this film, which is a MUST-SEE! I saw it in 3-D, which I also recommend.
