Baby Driver: “Full-Throttle” Music/Action/Love Story!

If you want to have a great time at the movies, drive – don’t even run – to see “Baby Driver”!  It was a smash at the “South By SouthWest” film festival, and it lived up to the hype!  It has one of the greatest soundtracks of all time (just about non-stop), consisting of classic rock, soul, rap, reggae, and other genres.  It’s also a terrific action movie/love story with great car chase sequences!  The Writer/Director, Edgar Wright, is a tremendous talent and I can’t wait to see his next film.  This movie is a MUST-SEE!

Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a driver without peer.  He always listens to music on his iPod because a car accident when he was a kid left him with severe bilateral tinnitus.  Therefore, he needs to continuously listen to music to drown out the ringing in his ears.  (The soundtrack is what is playing on his iPod.)

Baby got into small crime and made the mistake of robbing Doc (Kevin Spacey), who then forced him to drive his crew for big-time robberies.  Baby wants out, but needs to keep driving until he has paid Doc back all the money he stole from him.  He has only one job left to do, and then he will be free.  The film opens with a great car chase sequence right after a robbery with Doc’s crew, which includes Buddy (Jon Hamm) and his squeeze, Darling (Eliza Gonzalez).

At a diner, Baby meets a pretty waitress, Debora (Lily Jones), who wants to get away from her boring life.  Baby is smitten and wants to escape Doc and get a fresh start elsewhere with Debora.  Doc, however, demands that Baby do one more job for him – this time with a crew including Batts (Jamie Foxx).  Will Baby and Debora be able to drive off into the sunset?

See it ASAP.  “Baby Driver” is a joy ride!

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
