Ali Wong is one of my favorite female comics.  She stars in and has co-written “Always Be My Maybe.”  If you’re in the mood for a rom-com and don’t want to leave home, you can watch it now on Netflix!

Sasha (Ali Wong) and Marcus (Randall Park) have been next-door neighbors and good friends ever since childhood.  Sasha spent most of her time at Marcus’ house since her parents were never home.  When they are seniors in high school, they sleep together, although they had only been friends and hadn’t even kissed before then.

Shortly before they crossed this line, Marcus’ mother, who had taught Sasha how to cook, had just died.  Marcus was feeling overwhelmed and picks a fight with Sasha right after they sleep together.  They never speak to each other again.

The movie then picks up 15 years later.  Sasha is now a celebrity chef, engaged to a handsome, wealthy restaurateur.  Marcus is still living with his father and helping his father out in their air conditioning and heating repair business.  Marcus is in a rock band, but the group isn’t making any money.  Sasha’s fiance asks for a six-month break, and she meets Marcus again.  You can all figure out where it’s going from here, but the trip is charming and often very funny.  There is one terrific scene with Keanu Reeves at an ostentatious Asian fusion restaurant that almost made me spit out my Pinot Grigio!

Bottom Line: After you’re done binge-watching one TV series and before you start another, take a moment to see this charming comedy.  As Chef Sasha would say, “it’s a tasty treat!”

I have loved the movies ever since I saw “The Wizard of Oz” as a young boy. When Beatle-mania hit the USA, Rock-N-Roll was my greatest passion, but I haven’t enjoyed the current music scene nearly as much over the past 15 years, so that void has been filled by film. In college and med school, I would see movies with my friends and we would stay up late into the night chatting about them. I still love seeing movies with friends and then having dinner to discuss them. This blog evolved out of my desire to tell my movie-loving friends about movies I thought they would enjoy. The blog allows me to do this in a fun way and to reach movie fans everywhere.
